Frequently asked questions about reporting a lost item in Salt Lake City
How long do police, UTA, and the airport hold lost items?
SLCPD's property desk holds items per state law (typically 90 days). UTA keeps items for 30 days; after that, unclaimed items are donated or disposed of. Salt Lake City International Airport holds items for a limited time (check their policy for specifics). The sooner you file a report, the better.
Where do I pick up my item once it's found?
If found by police, you'll be contacted and directed to the appropriate police facility. For UTA items, visit the lost and found at their customer service location (3600 South 700 West). For airport items, go to level 3 of the terminal during business hours (Mon–Fri, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. MT). If found by a community member via social media or classifieds, they'll provide instructions.
How does ReportLost monitor local channels?
We scan KSL Classifieds, Facebook groups (Utah's Lost & Found, Lost Dogs/Cats groups), Reddit (r/SaltLakeCity), Nextdoor, and other public community channels multiple times per week, matching descriptions, locations, and dates against your report. If a credible match appears, you get an alert with the link and instructions to claim it.
What if I lost my item on public transit?
Report it to UTA immediately using their online form or by calling 801-743-3882 (801-RIDE-UTA). Items on buses, TRAX, and FrontRunner are sent to UTA's central lost and found. We ensure your report is filed and monitor for matches on local community posts.
Can ReportLost help if I lost a pet?
Yes. We have a dedicated lost pet reporting service that connects you with Salt Lake County Animal Services, shelter networks, and pet-focused social groups across the region. Visit our lost pet section to file a priority report that reaches animal control and pet rescue organizations immediately.
Is ReportLost.org an official government service, or does it replace the police?
ReportLost is an independent service; we are not part of SLCPD or any government agency. We help you file a report with the right authorities and then do the heavy lifting of monitoring the web so you don't have to. Filing through ReportLost does not replace an official report to police if your item was stolen or you need a case number for insurance. We complement and simplify the process.
