How it works

📋

You report the loss

Tell us what you lost, where, and when. We generate a report tailored to campus lost & found systems.

🔄

We route it to the right places

Your report goes directly to RUPD, Student Centers, and relevant campus channels. No need to call each desk yourself.

🔍

Your report keeps searching for a match

For your entire 6 or 12 month search period, your report automatically crosses new found items logged by campus services against your description. You get an alert the moment a credible match surfaces, so you don't have to check every day.

Where your lost item could be

Rutgers Busch has several places where found items get collected. We help you cover all of them at once.

🚔

Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD)

RUPD operates a centralized Lost and Found Database and property recovery system. Items reported on campus often end up in RUPD custody, especially high-value ones like wallets and phones. You can search their database directly, but we generate the exact report format they need and file it for you.

Losing your wallet, ring, or phone at Rutgers Busch Campus means navigating multiple offices, separate databases, and guessing which building has your item. The Lost & Found at Student Centers holds items for only 14 days, RUPD maintains its own database, and items turned in to campus buses go to yet another system. By the time you've called around, your item may already be gone.

ReportLost consolidates your loss into a single, professional report that reaches RUPD, Student Centers, transportation services, and the student community all at once. Once filed, your report stays active and keeps searching automatically for the entire duration of your search period, matching your item against new finds without you having to refresh websites or post repeatedly in campus groups.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Student Centers hold lost items?

The Busch Student Center and other campus locations keep items for a maximum of 14 days before disposal or donation. This is why filing a report quickly is important. We make sure your item gets into RUPD's longer-term database, which holds items much longer.

What if I lost my item on a campus bus?

Items found on Rutgers buses are delivered to the Rutgers University Police Department. When you file your report, we ensure it reaches both the transportation office and RUPD so the connection is made.

Can I search the RUPD Lost and Found Database myself?

Yes, you can search at park.ufcp.rutgers.edu/LostAndFound2. But we also file a formal report so RUPD is actively looking for your item and matching it against new finds as they come in.

What happens if my item isn't claimed after a certain time?

RUPD and Student Centers have internal policies for disposal or donation after retention periods. The sooner you file a report and search, the better. Our report stays active for 12 months, during which we keep cross-checking new found items against your description.

Do I need to fill out a claim form to get my item back?

Yes. Student Centers use the Pixit system for claims, and RUPD has its own claim process. We walk you through what information you'll need and which office to contact, depending on where your item is likely to be.

Is ReportLost.org official, or does it replace Rutgers Police?

ReportLost is an independent service, not affiliated with Rutgers or RUPD. We don't replace them, we complement them. We handle the legwork of contacting all the right departments and keeping your report active in the search, so you don't have to call each office separately. RUPD and Student Centers remain the official keepers of lost items.
