St. Johns County Sheriff's Office
The sheriff's office covers the broader county including much of St. Augustine. If your loss occurred in an unincorporated area or you're unsure of jurisdiction, this is typically the first stop. We verify which precinct or service area covers your exact loss location and make sure your report reaches the Property and Evidence Specialist.
St. Augustine Police Department
The city police handles losses within St. Augustine proper. Their Property and Evidence Specialist keeps found items for a set period. We generate the exact details you'll need to include when you follow up, and we flag which office and time windows align with their claim procedures.
St. Augustine Beach Police
If you lost an item at the beach or beach access area, St. Augustine Beach Police maintains a separate lost and found. We point you to their office and include their contact details in your report, so you know exactly where to claim if your item turns up there.
Sunshine Bus Company Lost and Found
St. Johns County operates the Sunshine Bus Company for local transit. If you lost something on a bus or at a transit hub, contact their customer service. We provide their phone number and the right way to describe your loss to their system.
Lost Pet? Priority help here
If you've lost a dog, cat, or other pet, the St. Johns County Pet Center and local animal control are your lifeline. Time is critical with lost pets. Report immediately to animal control and local shelters, and post in community pet groups right away. For faster coordination and ongoing alerts, file a priority lost pet report.
St. Augustine City Hall
City Hall can sometimes help direct lost items or connect you to the right department if you're unclear about jurisdiction. We include their contact info and can suggest the best timing and wording when you reach out.

Report my lost item →St. Augustine's historic downtown, beaches, and neighborhoods are wonderful places to spend time, but they're also places where wallets, phones, rings, and other precious items slip away. When loss happens, you're faced with a maze: which police precinct handles your area, which lost and found office to contact, which community groups are active, and how long do these places actually hold items?
ReportLost simplifies all of that into one action. You file one report and we route it to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, St. Augustine Police, and local services all at once. The key difference: your report stays active and keeps searching for a match across new found posts and community channels for months, so the burden of daily checking shifts from you to us. Once you've reported, you can focus on the moment and let the search continue behind the scenes.

Questions about lost items in St. Augustine
How long do police and lost and found offices hold items?
St. Augustine Police Property and Evidence holds items for a standard period; check with them directly at 904-825-1074 (Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for exact timelines. St. Johns County Sheriff's Office also maintains items but you should verify retention periods with them at (904) 824-8304. After an item leaves police custody, it may be donated or discarded, so reporting early matters.
Do I need to file a police report before visiting the lost and found office?
Not always. Some items can be claimed without a full police report. However, having an official report on file strengthens your claim and helps police and lost and found staff prioritize matching your description. ReportLost can help you decide whether a formal report is needed based on what you lost.
What if I'm not sure whether St. Augustine Police or the Sheriff's Office has my item?
It depends on where you lost it. St. Augustine Police covers city limits; the Sheriff's Office covers unincorporated St. Johns County. When you file a ReportLost report, we identify the right jurisdiction based on your loss location and route accordingly. You can also call both offices to ask, but we handle that routing for you.
If I lost something at the beach, should I call city police or beach police?
Call St. Augustine Beach Police directly at 904-471-3600. They operate a separate lost and found and respond to the beach zone specifically. We include their contact details and hours in your report so you know exactly who to reach.
Can I file a report for a lost item from another county that I left in St. Augustine?
Yes. If you lost something in St. Augustine but it originally came from elsewhere, report it to the St. Augustine service where you lost it. The location of loss is what matters for police procedure. We help you clarify these details in your report.
Is ReportLost.org an official police service, or does it replace police reports?
ReportLost.org is an independent service that coordinates reporting and keeps your search active on your behalf. We're not a police department and don't replace an official police report. When you submit a report through us, we route your information to the appropriate police departments and services in St. Augustine. If you need an official police report for insurance or legal reasons, the police will handle that separately. We're here to simplify the next steps and keep searching for you after you've reported.
